“TikTok refugees” migrate to Xiaohongshu because of ban fears.
As the US considers stopping TikTok, many users are switching to Xiaohongshu, a Chinese app. US users call it “Red Note.” Ryan, a TikTok user, posted a video on Xiaohongshu, saying, “I’m a TikTok refugee. The US government is stopping TikTok, so we’re looking for another choice.” His video received over 75,000 likes in one day.
The US Supreme Court might support a law to stop TikTok, which has 170 million US users. TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, is unwilling to sell it. As a result, US users are moving to Xiaohongshu. By Tuesday, there were over 114,000 posts with the hashtag #tiktokrefugees, with more than 2 million discussions and 73 million views.
Xiaohongshu became the most downloaded app on the US iOS app store. Lemon8, another ByteDance app, is also popular among displaced TikTok users. This change is seen as a way to show disagreement against the stop, which is based on US worries about information safety.
Dissatisfaction reflected
Experts say the “refugee” label shows TikTok users’ unhappiness with US political decisions. TikTok’s global headquarters are in Los Angeles and Singapore, and its servers are owned by Oracle, a US company. Yet, the US still plans to stop it.
Cultural shock
The increase in US users also shows a lack of trust in the US government and tech companies. Some US users are sharing pictures of their pets to connect with Xiaohongshu’s Chinese users. However, not all cultural exchanges are easy. A Chinese user faced criticism for a dance video, accused of spreading stereotypes.
While the arrival of “TikTok refugees” may be short-term, it gives Xiaohongshu a chance to rethink its international strategy and expand beyond the Chinese cultural area.
